When a liquor store wouldn't serve a man in Kadapa, India, he auctioned off his daughter to pay his tab. He got $21. When police found out, they (justifiably) beat him. The man who bought the child left her behind.

Another Pebble Beach Concours has come and gone, the confetti has flown and the champagne has been imbibed. The somewhat surprising Best of Show selection has been entered into the record books, and now, we, your faithful Autobloggers, can finally get some rest. It's been a grueling week full of new car unveilings, vintage car races, auctions and, of course, the Concours. As much as we enjoy every minute of it, and are sad to see it end, we're always glad to be home again, sleeping in our own beds. But before we crawl back into our caves to slumber for another year, we have some unfinished business to take care of.

There are always thousands of images that don't make it into the official posts, most of which are just as beautiful, and just as interesting. As you probably surmised if you've seen our coverage so far, this year's Concours was truly spectacular – from the Dawn Patrol entrance of the twelve Jaguar XK-SS roadsters to the crowning of the champ, we've shown you the tributes to Indy, Alfa, and Jaguar, to the Ferrari SWB and Ghia… and now it's time to show you all of the rest of the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. We've assembled a gallery of high-res images for you to peruse that covers what we didn't cover to date. Call it a parting nod to you our readers and to all those who make this such a great event. See you next year.

RM Auctions always reserves its most prestigious cars for Saturday night during the Monterey car week, and this year's lineup of vehicles was one of the most impressive in recent history. No less than 14 cars broke the million dollar mark, although the highlight of the auction, a 1958 Ferrari 250 TR, failed to meet its reserve price despite a $10.7 million offer on the table. Here's a rundown of the million dollar cars at the auction:

Lot 359: 1938 Talbot-Lago T150-C Lago Speciale Teardrop Coupe – $4,620,000
Lot 351: 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Berlinetta – $4,620,000
Lot 353: 1949 Delahaye Type 175 S Roadster by Saoutchik – $3,300,000
Lot 360: 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder – $2,612,500
Lot 347: 1955 Jaguar D-Type – $2,090,000

While following up on the various charity auctions being run to fund Glenn Beck’s August 28 “Restoring Honor” rally (and then the  Special Operations Warrior Foundation), I came across some items that are the very definition of “strange bedfellows.”

Beck fans have the opportunity to bid for a dinner with Andrew Breitbart, or copies of Beck tome Arguing with Idiots, signed by Beck and 2008 campaign relic William Ayers, or Beck and his fellow Mediaite fan Van Jones. Of particular interest is the very clever top bidder for the Breitbart dinner: Nevada congressional candidate Steven Nohrden.

Nohrden’s $2500 bid is tops so far to dine with Breitbart, but he’s also leading with a $5,000 bid on the Bill Ayers book. Winning dinner with Breitbart would be a great photo op for the Tea-Party-leaning candidate, and probably a bargain at twice the price.

Norhdren is also top bidder on an auction to rub elbows with Newt Gingrich, but has so far passed on coffee with Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Jindal, and a picnic on the steps of the Capitol with Michele Bachman.

Bidders can also win a chance to lunch with Rusty Wallace, and drive 60 laps in a “real NASCAR.” I don’t guess they’ll be tooling around the track in the entire National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, but I guess “NASCAR car” sounds too awkward. There’s also a random auction for a pair of stereo speakers.

As we have reported here before, each auction carries the disclaimer that all funds raised will first go to pay the cost of Beck’s rally, before any money goes to Special Operations Warrior Foundation. The charity told Mediaite that the rally’s estimated expenses were met several weeks ago, but that wasn’t enough to keep ABC from withdrawing an auction that featured an introduction to George Stephanopoulos. The GMA host has made a separate, personal donation to Special Operations Warrior Foundation.

Finally, after years and years of stagnation and painfully slow sales, small cars are starting to take a foothold in the United States. Or are they? While conventional wisdom makes us believe that Americans are ready to take the downsizing plunge in the face of – or at least the threat of – high fuel prices and environmental concerns (we're all still watching the Gulf Coast, right?), it seems that reality may once again set us straight.

Automotive sales watchdog Autodata has found that the gas-swilling large SUV segment is growing at a faster pace than the America's small car segment. Like statistics? Here we go: With a 19-percent jump over the first six months of 2010, large SUV sales have outpaced small cars (14 percent). Critically, they've also outpaced the overall market (17 percent).

Now, before we get our feathers riled up too much, realize that sales of large SUVs still lag way behind small cars – 974,000 to 121,000 through the first half of the year. Further, large crossovers like the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Flex, GMC Acadia and Lincoln MKT are included in those figures right alongside traditional behemoths like the Chevy Tahoe, Ford Expedition, Infiniti QX56 and Toyota Sequoia.

We also expect that small car sales will continue to climb with new models coming to market, such as the upcoming Ford Fiesta, Mazda2 and Hyundai's Accent and Elantra. That said, there's always going to be a demand for large and powerful SUVs that can haul people and stuff while towing a boat or camper in cool, air-conditioned comfort, and automakers will be only too happy to provide the thick-margined vehicles for their consumption. For better or for worse.

Selling an used car is a hassle and not always a profitable venture. A better way to get rid of that used car, truck, RV, boat or other type of vehicle is by donating it to charity. This is a way to make you feel good about yourself, knowing your good deed is helping those in need. Plus, you can usually get a tax deduction for it.

In Columbus Ohio, you have two wonderful choices of charities that will accept your donated car and auction it. One is The Volunteers of America and the other is Goodwill.

The Volunteers of America has been around for over 109 years. They help abuse children, youth at risk, the frail elderly and disabled homeless families. Each year it is estimated that they help on average 1.8 million people a year.

Their national phone number is 1-800-899-0089 or you can visit their national web site at www.VOA.ORG. In Columbus, Ohio, they can be reached at 614-870-7500 or toll free at 1-800-225-0732. Their auto auction is located at 5640 West Broad Street, Columbus OH 43228.

Their auction is held every Saturday at 10:00 am. People interested in buying must first register.

The car auction for the Goodwill is located at 1600 Integrity Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43209. The can be reached by phone at 614-444-AUTO. They also have a website listing that explains how you can donate your car and the on the Friday before each auction they post the current vehicles up for auction. Their website is www.giveauto.com.

The Goodwill has an auction twice a month, once on the 1st and once on the 3rd Thursday of each month. The lot opens at 8:00 am the day of the auction for previewing the vehicles. You must register at 8:30 if you think you are interested in participating in the auction. The auction starts at 10:00 am.

The Goodwill uses one hundred percent of the money earned through their auctions, after the cost of towing, to help the disabled in Central Ohio; their main way of helping is to help them find jobs through education and several other types of services. All the proceeds also stays within Central Ohio.

Both the organizations offer free pick up and free towing of the donated vehicle. All you have to do is give them a call.

When donating your vehicle you will be given a form that will allow you to deduct the chairtiable gift on your itemized taxes. You are allowed a deduction that equals the gross proceed of the auction sale. After the auction, you can contact the organization for that information.

Both organizations also have online forms that you can fill out, stating that you are interested in donating a vehicle. On the form, you will be asked some basic information about the vehicle and what is the best time for them to contact you via phone. This makes it more convenient in donating.

Selling vehicles can take a lot of one’s time. You may be hounded by endless calls and by people wanting to see the vehicle in person. A lot of the time, you just waste your time as people try to haggle with you about the cost. By donating your vehicle you are saving yourself this endless frustration and you know you will be helping some needy people. Sometimes you may even get a bigger tax deduction than you think. You could actually make more money this way than you would by just selling. And, yes, they will accept your vehicle, even if it doesn’t run, unlike most regular buyers.

So, if you have an used vehicle sitting in your driveway or yard, going to rust, think about helping somebody in need. Think seriously about donating that vehicle to either charity. By doing a good deed like this, you may even feel a warm feeling in your heart, knowing you did something good. And like our grandmothers use to tell us, all good deeds will come back to us, when we need help ourselves.

Seized Cars

An enormous portion of the American economy is based on the automobile. Making cars, selling cars, repairing cars, financing cars, and then junking the cars.

What is especially interesting is that virtually the entire automobile-related economy is based on trying to cheat the consumer.

You, the consumer, are prey to the economic engine of the automobile. Yet, you have to have a car to get to and from work so you can afford to pay for the car. Thus, you have to buy the damned things. Based on personal experience, consisting of having lost tens of thousands of dollars in car deals, is the basis to provide you with this most helpful advice….how to buy a car and make the car dealer really happy.

The first order of business is to tell the car dealer salesperson (who usually does wear white shoes) that you have the ability to spend $500 a month on the car. You will only be shown cars that cost $500 a month for the rest of your life.

Very early in the negotiations the car dealer will want to run a deal through the banks to see if you can afford $500 a month. Comply instantly. Often, the credit report will come back showing that you really could spend $600 a month on buying a car. You will then only be shown cars that will cost $600 a month (but they will have genuine Corinthian leather interiors).

However, if your credit report shows that you will only qualify for a $400 a month car, you will suddenly be shown smaller cars.

Most car buyers want to test drive the car. While this is fun, especially if you like to speed up to 90 mph and then slam on the brakes to see if they work, a serious advantage can be granted to the salesman buy saying you don't want to test drive the car. This way, you can be sold a car that only turns left, and not right.

Let us assume you really want a white car, but the dealer doesn't have a white car. You will find out all the disadvantages of owning a white car (whatever they may be), but the black car is much better. In Arizona, black cars heat up in the summer and turn into furnaces. But they will really look nice in the winter.

Cars always have stickers on them. Agree immediately to pay the sticker price, including the undercoating the dealer never put on. The salesman will really warm up to you, and might even offer you a free dinner at a cheap restaurant for not dickering over the price.

If you chose to negotiate, you will often find some special program exists that reduces the price, but only if you finance the car through the dealer's bank at a much higher rate of interest than you could get from the same bank if you called them yourself. A dealer can actually sell a car “below cost” as long as the financing part of the deal gives the dealer lots of interest income.

Then comes the trade-in negotiation. Avoid checking out the classified ads to see what your trade-in is selling for, and never go to the Kelly Blue Book web site and find out what the wholesale and retail value of your trade-in might be (even though this is free). When the salesman offers $4,000 for your $14,000 trade-in, say “Gosh, yes.” Never go back to the dealer's lot after you trade-in your car, so you can avoid seeing how much they are asking for it.

Often dealers just sell your trade-in at the local car auction. Never go to one of these, because you don't want to know what cars are really worth.

If your trade-in has a major problem, like the engine is failing, make sure you tell the salesman about the problem. Of course, if you were buying this car from the dealer, he wouldn't tell you about the problem. But fair is fair.

Sometimes you will discover that the trade-in value of your car is less than what you currently owe on the car. No problem. The dealer will just add the “upside down” number to the new car purchase price, and your debt on the old car will be transferred to the new car, along with the price of the new car. If your bank (or more likely the dealer's bank) agrees to this, everyone wins…except you.

Always have the title to your trade-in ready to sign, so you don't have any second thoughts about giving up your old reliable car for a new one.

Once you have selected the car the salesman wants to sell you (which is always the car that the dealer will make the most profit on), the contract will be presented. A car purchase contract is always very long, and in very fine print. Car dealers do not want you to read the contract. This is when they start feeding you cokes or coffee, to make sure you have to go to the rest room. It doesn't matter, the contract gives the dealer every right possible, and the purchaser none, and the contract is not negotiable.

But, there are a lot of blanks in the contract for extras, such as special protection plans. These are also major profit sources to dealers. Be sure to buy one.

If you are buying a used car, remember the words “as is”. That means there is absolutely no warranty whatsoever. If the car makes it off the lot, it is yours. All used cars will be able to do this. Why worry.

Once you have bought your car, if it is new it will have a warranty. For a short while. Never long enough to match up to what you owe…so you will have to buy another car (being “upside down”) and increase your debt.

Once the car is off warranty (assuming you keep it) or the car was used in the first place, you now enter the next zone of car theft…the repair shop.

Are you a Dr. Who fan who also happens to have a lot of money? Well then this is your lucky day. Actually if you ask me everyday is a lucky day for you, since you have a lot of money and there’s a brand new season of Dr. Who. But today you’re extra lucky – Bonhams will be auctioning off the Tardis prop that was used by the Ninth Doctor in the 2005 season.

According to the lot’s details, the 10 ft. tall phone booth/time machine/house, is “a painted rasped wood panel and glass construction”. The “Police Box” signs are removable, and it comes with roof lamps and additional interior lighting. No mention is made about its time-traveling capabilities though, so I’m guessing they’ve been disabled due to liability concerns.

The auction will take place on June 23, 2010; the prop is estimated to fetch between £8,000 to £12,000 (approx. $12,000 to $18,000 USD). Check out Bonhams’ website for more details.
